“Echo Already” ( Habacuc 3:19 KNOX ) by Carley Evans

English: Red deer

“The Lord, the ruler of all, is my stronghold; he will bring me safely on my way, safe as the hind whose feet echo already on the hills. (For the chief singer, to the harp’s music.)”

The picture here is of a hind – a female red deer – safely on a hillside, her feet sending echoes into the valley below. She is perfectly safe where she is. She is in her element, her stronghold; she has been safely brought to where she belongs. She will stay.

“In Safety Beneath His Wings” (Psalm 91: 1, NEB) by Carley Evans

If God is an eagle, then you are safe beneath His wings as “He covers you with His pinions.” (Psalm 91: 4) Here you find shelter as you “lodge under the shadow of the Almighty.” God is your “safe retreat.”

“A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand close at hand, but you it does not touch; His truth is your shield and your rampart. With your own eyes you see all this.” (Psalm 91: 7, 8)

If God is an eagle, “He Himself snatches you away from the fowler’s snare;” and “you do not fear the hunter’s trap by night.” (Psalm 91: 3, 5) You do not fear as you “live in the shelter of the Most High.”

God Himself says, “You see with your own eyes…how I carry you on eagles’ wings and bring you here to Me. If only you now listen to Me and keep My covenant, then out of all peoples you are my special possession; for the whole earth is Mine.” (Exodus 19: 4 – 5)

“Make the Most High your refuge.” (Psalm 91: 9)

“God Among Us” (Zephaniah 3: 17, HCSB) by Carley Evans

God “rejoices over [me] with gladness… He delights in [me] with shouts of joy.” As I am born again, He holds me tenderly. “He brings [me] quietness with His love” as a mother lulls her child to sleep with swaddling. God holds me close to Himself, keeping me safe for He is “a warrior who saves.”

God is a tender warrior with the strength of armies and the gentleness of a mother with her newborn. See Him holding you and me in His strong hands. See Him warring against the powers aligned against us.

“Yahweh [our] God is among [us]!”

“Safe” (Proverbs 29: 25, ESV) by Carley Evans

“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”

Wow! How many times do you wake up in the middle of the night in fear of man? Or, struggle to sleep because of a ‘man,’ a person in your sphere who has — or appears to have — a great deal of influence on whether you eat or not? You are not in the trap yet, but it is certainly set. I imagine a bear trap with those iron claws which hold and tear the flesh, or a smaller, more subtle rabbit snare which holds and chokes away the air.

The struggle to escape the trap does the damage.

God, through Solomon, says: ‘Trust in Me. If you trust in Me, you will be safe.’

A promise so difficult for us to fully grasp. I don’t feel safe! I feel so vulnerable. So many things can go wrong, and do! How can the Lord say that I will be safe?

Paul writes, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us.” (Romans 8: 18) And he reminds us, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8: 28)

Trust God — seek Him first, and He will keep you safe.
